About Aureus
From a research institute, to a global private health group
In 1991, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States (the Seattle–Tacoma
region), a group of clinicians and researchers founded a systems-biology-based,
patient-centered functional medicine institute, establishing the clinical
model and seven core characteristics that remain in use today.
Since 2001, the educational and clinical framework has been directly accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). It has
since partnered with world-renowned medical institutions including Cleveland
Clinic and Weill Cornell Medicine. Building on this heritage, Aureus offers
discreet, personalized, lifelong private care to families and corporate
clients around the world.

Our Medical Century · Founding
A Functional Medicine Journey Across Three Centuries
Functional Medicine is no passing concept — it has a documented heritage
stretching back more than a century. The milestones below are drawn from
published medical history.
1871
The concept first appears in The Lancet
In the 19th century, the English physician Willoughby Wade delivered a
clinical lecture published in The Lancet, using the term "Functional
Medicine" for the first time. He urged his peers to recognize how functional
disturbance precedes disease, calling for medicine that "blends science and art."
1980s
The foundations of modern functional medicine
The biochemist Dr. Jeffrey Bland was invited by two-time Nobel Laureate
Linus Pauling to serve as Director of Nutritional Research at the Linus
Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, laying the groundwork for a
modern functional medicine model rooted in systems biology.
1991
The institute is formally founded
Following a small academic gathering in the Pacific Northwest, the Institute
for Functional Medicine (IFM) was established, defining the seven core
characteristics: patient-centered care, systems biology, the dynamic balance
of gene–environment interaction, biochemical individuality, organ reserve and
health span, positive vitality, and function before pathology.
2001
Direct ACCME accreditation
Since 2001, its educational programs have been directly accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), with content
grounded in current science, evidence and clinical reasoning, and continuously
evaluated for effectiveness.
2010s
Entering top-tier medical centers
Cleveland Clinic opened a functional medicine center led by Dr. Mark Hyman,
becoming one of the first leading U.S. hospital systems to offer functional
medicine comprehensively; collaborative programs followed with Weill Cornell
Medicine and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Founding · Medical Century
A global private health group's century-spanning medical heritage
The functional medicine heritage carried forward by Aureus has a documented
history reaching back to 1871, while the institute itself was formally founded in 1991.
The earliest expression in The Lancet
The English physician Willoughby Wade delivered a lecture published in The Lancet
introducing "Functional Medicine," noting that every symptom arises from the
imperfect discharge of some function and that medicine requires "a slightly higher
order of thought." The framework holds true some 150 years later.
Formally founded in the Pacific Northwest
Dr. Jeffrey Bland, together with a group of clinicians and researchers in the
Seattle–Tacoma region, founded the Institute for Functional Medicine, establishing
the same year the seven core characteristics: patient-centered care, systems biology,
gene–environment interaction and biochemical individuality among them.
International medical education accreditation
Since 2001 it has been directly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME), and hundreds of thousands of healthcare practitioners
worldwide have trained in the framework.
The Aureus mission
The experience of partnering with institutions such as Cleveland Clinic and Weill
Cornell Medicine is translated by Aureus into private care and health-concierge
